Here we believe that a dollar saved is two dollars earned. With that in mind, how we spend our time is an investment. An important day like Veterans Day is certainly no exception.
Here are some ways you can give thanks in honor of those who have served our country:
- Show your appreciation to a veteran you know by sending a free e-card containing a personalized message through the Real Warriors Campaign, an initiative launched by the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE).
- They also offer other suggestions to demonstrate your thanks, including serving veterans in your community and serving military families, who are often unsung heroes.
- The United Service Organizations Inc. (USO), a private nonprofit organization providing support in the form of morale and recreational services to members of the US military, offers ways to help make a difference.
- Celebrate veterans contributions by spending time with them. Check out this roundup of free and discounted dining and entertainment options.
- Use this holiday as an educational experience by bringing a friend or loved one to a historically significant location in our nation such as:
- National Parks around the US, which have free entrance days November 11-13 for Veterans Day Weekend
- Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which is offering free admission November 11-13 to active-duty military, reservists, retirees, veterans, and their immediate dependents
- The Truman Library and Museum in Missouri, offering free admission for all US service members and veterans for Veterans Day
- Battleship Missouri in Hawaii, which will host a free Veterans Day Sunset Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m.
- Several special events taking place in Washington, D.C., summarized by the Washington Post
