Do you have a shopping problem? Do you asking yourself "will my husband notice if I buy these fabulous strappy high heeled sandals?" Do you "lie by omission" to your partner about where your money has gone? Don't hide it anymore because according to the Wall Street Journal your not alone!
The Wall Street Journal asked Are You a Secret Spender and apparently many people said yes. American Express performed a study of more than 2,000 adults regarding spending and their relationships. 27% have lied on the purchase amount while 30% have hidden purchases from their significant other.
A dear friend of mine would have her online shoe orders sent to her office then wear her shoes home since her husband wouldn't notice shopping bags (or shoe shipments). She secretly added to her massive shoe collection until I asked about how her boss felt about her getting so many packages at work. Her husband was in hearing range. My bad.
Having shoes sent to your office rather then your home isn't as bad as some people in this study. To hide their spending some people in the American Express study have gone as far as:
- Burying their purchase in the backyard
- Pretending items came from Goodwill
- Hiding purchases in grocery bags to bring them home
- Planning for their purchase to arrive while their significant other is away (I'll fess up to that one!)
- Sneaking out to purchase an item in the middle of the night
Are you a secret spender? Try to hide any major purchases? Do you ship shoes to your office?
