Live below your means. Not above (Keeping up with the Jones') and not with-in your means.
We always ask for our military discount - just this weekend we saved 10% off our plants at Lowes. You NEVER know unless you ask.
Our biggest savings as a military family is the COMMISSARY. Use coupons to cover the surcharge and more and you're consistently getting groceries way below retail.
Go to the commissary website every ten days for updated sales online and compare with your coupons and remember that you can use usually a military and manfacturer coupon and the sales items are way below the name brand stores. Also diapers for example, u can use the coupons on the item which are designated only for military at the PX and use your manufacturer and save a ton! Don't forget the case lot sales too! So worth it!
CONSIGNMENT SHOPS!!! Consignment shops, coupons and a barter system with friends is a great way to save. Especially when it comes to kids clothes, make friends with other moms and dads and then trade off clothing and keep passing around those hand me downs that have a lot of life left in them. Most consignment shops only sell decent items and it's a great way to save. Yard sales are the same concept and you can always do the same thing with your old items and make some of the money back that you spend. :)
We regularly use bookoo.com (an online yard sales site for military bases worldwide) to buy and sell practically everything. This site is very useful especially when you are new to a base and need certain items, or when you are getting ready to move to a new base and need to cut back on the things you are shipping. It's an easy way to sell things, especially baby items, etc. without dealing with the contracts and fees of a thrift store.
I don't know if I shoud write this kind of embarrasing, but my husband calls it "dumpster diving" when we lived in Germany we use to drive around post the night before trash day and find items people were throwing away. We would take them home clean them up and than take it to the thrift store on post and make money. Honestly we use to bring home on average around $100 extra a month doing this!
ALWAYS pay off the full statement amount on your credit card and take advantage of the perks like Discover rewards cashback. It's basically free money! Credit cards don't count on you always paying off your statement, so take advantage of them! :)
